HOW THE FENCE WORKS

Our Method.

Fairness is a process, not a slogan. Here is the standard our reporting must meet.

Start with the original

Before publishing a factual claim, we look for primary sources: parliamentary records, legislation, public data, official announcements and the complete original statement. Where we rely on another publication, we attribute it.

Keep fact and opinion separate

Fact Checks establish what can be supported by evidence. Investigations examine questions in depth. The Fence Post is commentary. The Fence Explains is civic education. Our conclusions should not outrun the records we can show.

Give context and an opportunity to reply

A vote on an amendment is not automatically a vote on a whole bill. An unanswered public comment does not prove private correspondence was ignored. Material criticism of an identifiable person should be checked carefully, and a meaningful opportunity to respond should be offered when appropriate.

Corrections remain visible

If a meaningful factual error is identified, we correct it and explain the change. New information may update an article without erasing its earlier publication history.

Respect privacy

We do not publish private conversations, personal details or unverified allegations merely because they are interesting. Screenshots require context and responsible handling.
